Why Is My Treadmill Belt Slipping?

A slipping belt feels like a stutter or a brief loss of grip when your foot lands, and it usually gets worse at higher speeds or on an incline. Don’t ignore it. It can throw you off balance.

Safety first: unplug the machine before you touch anything under the motor cover or near the belt. If you’re not comfortable with a step, stop there.

Common causes

  • Walking belt too loose. Belts stretch over time. Most treadmills have adjustment bolts at the back roller for tension and tracking. Your owner’s manual gives the exact steps for your model. Small, even turns on both sides are the rule.
  • Worn belt or deck. If the belt is worn smooth, frayed, or the deck underneath is worn, adjusting tension won’t fix it for long.
  • Drive belt slipping. Many treadmills have a smaller belt between the motor and the front roller. If it’s worn or loose, the motor spins but the walking belt doesn’t keep up.
  • Lubrication. A belt that hasn’t been lubricated as the manufacturer recommends puts extra load on the motor and can cause other problems. Use only the lubricant your manual calls for.

What not to do

Don’t overtighten the belt to stop the slip. Too much tension wears the rollers, bearings and motor faster.
